Title:

"Disease Consequences of Low Maintenance Turf” with Rich Buckley, Director, Plant Diagnostic Laboratory, Rutgers NJAES and Matt Elmore, Ph.D., Associate Extension Specialist in Weed Science - Turfgrass, Landscapes, Pastures and Forages, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Department of Plant Biology

Speaker Bio:

Richard Buckley - Richard Buckley is the Director of the New Jersey Agricultural Experimental Station Soil Testing and Plant Diagnostic Services at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. He received his BS in Entomology and Plant Pathology from the University of Delaware and MS in Turfgrass Pathology from Rutgers that lead to his current position. In addition to his responsibilities as Director of the STPDS, Mr. Buckley is an instructor in the Rutgers Professional Golf Turf Management School and teaches courses in diseases and insect pests of turf grass and ornamental plants. He is also a frequent lecturer and invited speaker on disease and insect pest problems in turf and ornamental, plant problem solving, and disease and pest management techniques.

Matt Elmore joined the Rutgers faculty on November 1 as the new weed science extension specialist in turf grass, landscapes, pastures and forages. Matt earned his B.S. in Turfgrass Science from Penn State University before moving south and earning an M.S. and PhD. from the University of Tennessee with a focus in turf grass weed control. Prior to joining Rutgers, Matt was a Turfgrass Extension Specialist for Texas A&M AgriLife in Dallas, TX where his research efforts explored new strategies to control problematic weeds and reduce irrigation inputs in turf grass. His program at Rutgers will focus on novel strategies to control weeds with fewer pesticide inputs. The program will also focus significant efforts to developing alternatives to synthetic pesticides and understanding the influence of management practices on weed competitiveness.

Talk Description:

Part I (Rich Buckley - 30 minutes): For better or worse, more and more pressure is being felt by plant managers to use less fuel, water, fertilizer, and pesticides to produce suitable lawns and landscapes. The trend toward less, however, has some negative consequences. This 30-minute lecture covers common turf diseases found on low-input turf stands. Each disease will be profiled including proper identification, fungal biology, epidemiology, and control tactics including all cultural, chemical, and biological options within the context of proper Integrated Pest Management practice and low input solutions.

Part II (Matt Elmore - 30 minutes): We will also discuss some of the most common weeds. For each weed, we will discuss identification, life cycles, and how to best integrate herbicide strategies with cultural management options for control.
