2017 Private “Behind the Scenes” and Walking Tour of Longwood Gardens

Meet at Rutgers EcoComplex, 1200 Florence Columbus Rd., Bordentown, NJ

Cost including Bus is $89.00 for Members | $105 for Non-Members

8:00 am - Registrants meet at Rutgers EcoComplex and begin to board charter bus.

8:30 am-10:00 am - Travel to Longwood Gardens

10:45am-12:15pm – Group 1 - Longwood Gardens Staff will be the tour guides for a private, “behind-the-scenes” tour that will provide participants with a closer look at the 4-acre Conservatory that, in the winter, It is filled with orchids & other flowering plants.  Information will be provided on how this glasshouse operates, how they maintain the plants, & will include a visit to the Heat Plant Control Room which Heats the entire Conservatory.  The tour also includes a visit to the production greenhouses, which will provide information on how the horticultural staff studies, propagates and cares for the plants at the gardens.  Facilitated Q&A will follow tour.

10:45-12:15pm- Group 2 – NJNLA Representatives will be helping to direct this walking tour of Longwood Gardens.  They will be pointing out the following: The Fountains with an ever-changing musical program, more than 1,700 fountain jets creating soaring water in all shapes, sizes, and heights, and infinite color combinations.  Conservatory Highlights - Enjoy a guided walk and discover more about the spectacular horticulture featured this season. Wonders of the Waterlilies - Learn more about the pools, plants and fish that are part of this amazing display. Student Exhibition Garden Talks - Hear Professional Gardener students discuss their designs and visions for these unique gardens. Garden Highlights - Enjoy a guided walk and discover more about a select historic east garden at peak display. Meadow Garden Management Walk - Join the Natural Lands Caretaker to discover how they steward their Meadow Garden from soil to sky. Meadow Garden Wildflower Walks - Join the wildflower experts on their meadow trails to discover what’s in bloom.

The Group will be divide into 2 Groups while one group is taking the “Behind the Scenes” tour the other group will be taking a walking tour together through Longwood Gardens.  There will be NJNLA Members helping to direct this tour and generate sharing, networking, and discussion about sections

on the tour.

12:15pm to 1:30pm – Lunch - Both Groups are invited to meet at The Café for lunch which will be on their own. This will also be a time for networking and discussing some of what they have already seen.

1:45 pm-3:15 pm   -   The two Groups will switch and Group 2 will now be on the “behinds the Scenes” tour, while Group 1 will be on the regular walking tour.   

3:30 pm-5:00 pm - Registrants meet and board charter bus for return to EcoComplex parking lot.
