DESCRIPTION: Members of the Green Industry have a responsibility to be Good Stewards to the Environment. This seminar will focus on the tools you should be using when choosing a pesticide. University of Wisconsin Pesticide Efficacy Calculator: This calculator is intended to provide research-based product efficacy ratings for the professional turfgrass manager. Each Product or Active Ingredient receives a point rating for controlling specific fungus and weeds.

For fungicides:

4 = Consistently excellent control under high disease pressure

3 = Consistently excellent control, though some breakdown under high disease pressure

2 = Fair to good control under most conditions, periodic breakdowns in disease control

1 = Control is inconsistent between experiments but performs well in some instances

N = No efficacy

L = Limited published data on effectiveness

For herbicides:

4-Excellent, greater than 90% prevention or control

3-Good, 75-90% prevention or control

2-Fair, 50-75% prevention or control

1-Poor, less than 50% prevention or control

Demonstration of University of Wisconsin Pesticide Efficacy Calculator EIQ Calculator (Environmental Impact Quotient): The EIQ Calculator is used to estimate the environmental impact of pesticides. The closer to zero the lower the impact. The EIQ formula was created to provide pest managers data regarding the environmental and health impacts of their pesticide options so they can make better informed decisions regarding their pesticide selection. It combines known toxicological and environmental fate information about pesticides, including toxicity to humans, fish, birds and other non-target organisms; and pesticide characteristics such as likelihood to leach or runoff, soil persistence, and plant leaf persistence.

"Incorporation of native plants in the landscape and lawn alternatives"

DESCRIPTION:      Participants will learn how our industry can correct the past and current landscape practices that damage our ecosystems. This discussion on how habitat fragmentation of natural areas by shopping malls, office complexes, farming, large residential and commercial lawns maintained with synthetic chemicals are some of the leading causes of avian and invertebrate animal species decline.
The 'green' industry can become part of the solution by viewing landscape maintenance and construction through a different lens. This new perspective relies on not just whether a plant is visually appealing. However, it depends on native plants that are both aesthetically pleasing and ecologically productive. When we remove unnecessary or problematic lawn monocultures from the landscape and replace them with new and improved green infrastructure methods, we can build ecologically productive landscapes that manage stormwater, restore ecological diversity, and return valuable ecosystem services to the landscape. Turfgrass Pollinator Best Management Practices: What they are, why they’re necessary, and how to implement them

DESCRIPTION:  Concerns about pollinator health have dominated discussions in agriculture and horticulture alike for many years now. While we do have a better handle on the maladies that our pollinators suffer from, we are still grappling with the political fallout surrounding insecticide use, specifically those in the neonicotinoid class. Politicians seek to ban or significantly restrict their use, regulators at the EPA don’t fully understand how lawn and landscape professionals use these products and how beneficial they are to a thoughtful and environmentally sound approach to landscape management. The advent of Best Management Practices (BMP’s) in horticulture provides professionals a tool to use in conjunction with integrated pest management to care for turfgrass and ornamentals in a more holistic manner. BMP’s can also be crafted to focus on individual aspects of horticulture, such as pollinator protection. In this talk, NALP’s Bob Mann, a longtime member of the professional lawn care community, discusses pollinator protection and how lawn and landscape professionals can make a big difference in how they approach caring for their customer’s properties.

INSECTS THAT SUCK! Modern Concepts in Scale Management for the Landscape and Nursery

DESCRIPTION:  Scale insects are routinely encountered on samples submitted to the Plant Diagnostic Laboratory at Rutgers. These silent killers sneak up on plant managers and can cause significant problems for many plants when left unchecked. Not only are these critters hard to identify, but they are also hard to control. This 60-minute lecture covers several common armored and soft scales encountered in New Jersey. Proper identification, scale biology, scouting techniques, and least toxic control options will be discussed with a strong emphasis on proper Integrated Pest Management practice.
