Ed will include different ways that these trees can be shaped (pruned)
from a production nursery.

resulting in a changing landscape. If we consider this as an
opportunity, we can create and maintain healthy plant communities.
Climate, stressors, pests and pathogens will be discussed, along with
mitigation options. Beth will incorporate plant selections from Ed
Gregan's presentation and provide suggestions for proactive landscape
design and management.

Tuesday, August 18th –
Speaker - Shannon Currey, Marketing Director, Hoffman Nursery
Title - “A Broader Vision: Green Infrastructure and the Power of Plants”
Description - The plants and services our industry provides are often perceived as a luxury. But our own experience and a growing body of research tell us that green spaces are vital to the health and well-being of our communities. What can we do to better promote that connection and the power of plants? How can we demonstrate that our plants and expertise are necessities rather than luxuries? One obvious example is green infrastructure (GI). It uses the power of plants, soils, and natural systems to manage water and create healthier urban environments. GI generates cost effective solutions and economic, environmental, and social benefits beyond traditional infrastructure approaches. It also represents a broader vision for how we use and think about plants. In this presentation, get an overview of GI and some of the key factors that drive its implementation. Marketing Director Shannon Currey will share Hoffman Nursery experience growing for and learning about GI. She will suggest strategies to build new connections and promote the power of plants.

Thursday, August 20th – KEYNOTE ADDRESS
Speaker: Dr. Doug Tallamy
Title: “Nature’s Best Hope”
Description: Recent headlines about global insect declines, the impending extinction of one million species worldwide, and three billion fewer birds in North America are a bleak reality check about how ineffective our current landscape designs have been at sustaining the plants and animals that sustain us. Such losses are not an option if we wish to continue our current standard of living on Planet Earth. The good news is that none of this is inevitable. Tallamy will discuss simple steps that each of us can- and must- take to reverse declining biodiversity and will explain why we, ourselves, are nature’s best hope.
