Timothy J. Waller, Ph.D. - Rutgers Cooperative Extension Agriculture Agent for Cumberland County NJ, will discuss important propagation and other cool-season pests and diseases, covering their management through chemical, cultural, IPM, and exclusion practices. Understanding the factors responsible for plant pests and pathogens ultimately leads to more ecological and economical decision-making in ornamental crop production and is broadly applicable to multiple green industries.

In the second half of the presentation Dr. Waller will discuss using degree-day models and other approaches to prepare for coming seasons. Management of our chemical controls is of utmost importance in a world of increasing pesticide resistance and limited pollinator friendly options, in addition to the cost of chemicals and the potential for supply-chain disruption when the materials are actually needed, thus, preparation is key. The use of growing degree-day (GDD) models in combination with site-specific knowledge is critical to environmentally sound approaches to IPM. Examples of currently available degree-day and predictive models will be discussed and participants will be guided through a virtual tour of these valuable tools. Additional insights, tips and tricks will be discussed as well.
