Native Plant Talk & Tour

offered by NJNLA, Pinelands Nursery &

Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Monmouth County

Thursday, July 28th, 2022 beginning at 4:30pm

Agenda

4:30pm                 Gather | Networking

5pm-6pm              Talk:

                              Native Plant Integrated Pest Management

Bill Errickson & Tim Waller (30 mins)

Integrated pest management (IPM) is an approach that uses knowledge about pests and their life

cycles to manage pest problems through cultural practices, non chemical methods, and

pesticides. This presentation will focus on applying IPM principles to native plant nurseries and

landscapes to reduce pesticide use, while maintaining high quality plants that provide important

ecosystem services. Scouting and monitoring, pest identification, growing degree days, and the

use of control materials that have reduced environmental impacts will be discussed.

Kelly Gill – Xerces Society (30 mins)

As pollinator gardening grows in popularity, many retail and production nurseries are

experiencing a rise in demand for plants that attract bees and butterflies. Pollinator

stewardship includes examining pest management practices and instituting production

methods that safeguard pollinators. Join Kelly Gill, Xerces’ Senior Pollinator Conservation

Specialist, to learn about growing bee-safe plants. Topics include an overview of

pollinator-friendly integrated pest management (IPM) strategies in nurseries, practices

that support beneficial and how they contribute to pest control, using non-chemical

methods to prevent and manage pests, limiting risk to pollinators if pesticides are used,

and where to find additional resources.

6pm-7pm              Dinner & Networking

7pm-8pm              Tour:

IPM and Production Tour of Native Plants

Rutgers Cooperative Extension agents Bill Errickson (Monmouth) and Tim Waller (Cumberland)

will accompany native plant nursery operator Tom Knezick and attendees through a native plant

nursery while discussing IPM tactics for controlling common pests, the interplay between

chemical or biological insect management applications and their effects on natural predators and

population dynamics, as well as providing insight on cultural and key pest avoidance practices.
