NJ Pest: 3A-2, 8C-2, PP2-2, LTE/LTCO -1, ISA: 1 Certified Arborist, 1 BCMA - Science and CNLP; 1 Environment

(Credits Applied For: NJUCF)

March 28th, 2023

7:00pm to 8:15pm

7:00 - Introduction & Legislative Update - Legislative update on the bill and subsequent rules that  will ban neonics for use by pesticide applicators in New Jersey. One of the limitations of the bill is lack of alternatives for treating many invasive pests, including spotted lanternfly.
Speaker Keith M. Bennett, CGCS, Sales Manager for Grass Roots Turf Products and Past-President of the New Jersey Green Industry Council (NJGIC) will report on NJGIC’s efforts on behalf of New Jersey’s      green industry and how NJGIC is included as part of the stakeholder group during the NJDEP rule making process.

     7:15 - Neonicotinoid Alternatives
Speaker Mark Ware (Arborologist and Board Certified Master Arborist, Rainbow Ecoscience)
Biography - Mark Ware is an Arborologist and Board Certified Master Arborist on the Rainbow     Ecoscience team, covering the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. He brings more than ten years of
experience in arboriculture, plant health care and ornamental horticulture to his position.  As an Arborologist, Mark is responsible for supporting research work within Rainbow and for providing PHC technical and application training to clients and their technicians.
Course Description - Neonicotinoid treatments, such as imidacloprid and dinotefuran, have been frontline tools for the most significant urban tree health issues of the 21st Century, including hemlock woolly adelgid, emerald ash borer, and spotted lanternfly. As there is no 1:1 replacement for these products, it can be challenging to figure out alternative approaches to these pest issues when neonicotinoid use is not an option or limited. Fortunately, they are still only one of the tools that are available to us in the toolbox, and while they may be on the top shelf of that toolbox for most of us, we will discuss the other options and strategies available to us.
         Course Agenda:
         What are neonicotinoids? (15 min)
Why are they under scrutiny? (15 min)
What alternative products are available? (15 min)
Examples of incorporating non-neonicotinoids into protocols (15 min)
Become familiar with what other stem injected/soil injection systemic products are currently available to landscape
         managers
         Labeled pests treated
         Research
         Signal Words and PPE
