Title: Invasive Species – Legislation, Regulation, Control, Alternatives & What it All Means to the Green
Industry
Description: This panel
of experts will cover all aspects of invasive species – what is an invasive species and how
does it affect our environment, control with using pesticides, what
does the current proposed ban look like, how
will it be regulated, how will exemptions be handled, and what research is being done on invasive species and
alternatives using cultivars, native
or non-native/non-invasive plants.
6-7pm – Speaker: Tim Waller, Ph.D. Rutgers Cooperative Extension – Cumberland Co.
Bio: Timothy J Waller is serving in his third year as the Commercial Nursery agent of Rutgers Cooperative
Extension in southern NJ, based out
of Cumberland County. Tim has a Ph.D. in Plant Biology with a focus on
fungal
plant pathology and has been a licensed pesticide applicator since
2011. His research interests focus on
pest management; chemical use understanding whether that be towards insect
or animal, disease, or weeds.
He utilizes systems approaches to navigate multiple issues via single resource expenditures. He is keen to
develop contemporary knowledge-based interfaces that will allow producers
and applicators to quickly and
accurately diagnosis, treat, and
prevent on-going or newly arrived horticultural problems.
Title: Practical Understanding of Pest Scouting Guides and Other Field Observations
Description: Tim
Waller will be discussing how to best scout for and ultimately manage insect pests throughout
the nursery and greenhouse settings. He will be demonstrating how to
best use the Rutgers Nursery and Landscape
Pest Scouting with Growing Degree-day guide developed
by his office and the Rutgers Nursery and Green Industry
Working Group in preparation of upcoming Rutgers Nursery IPM field
days. Topics will include pest identification,
monitoring and scouting techniques,
decision making considerations, and materials selections for commercial
operators. He will also be discussing his continuing work with Oomycete
root rotting pathogens such as
Phytophthora and Pythium, with a
focus on identification, cultural practice modification, and oomycete specific
chemical selection and use patterns.
